B.C. food diary

It's Tuesday. Let's talk food.

As you may know, Paul and I recently embarked on a cross-Canada road trip culminating in a week in Vancouver and a weekend in Victoria. We had some good, some not so good, and some outstanding meals while we were there. I managed to photograph nearly everything I ate, so here goes!

The Naam, Vancouver

Revered as one of Vancouver's best vegetarian restaurants, the Naam was the first place we went upon our arrival. Although the outdoor patio was beautiful and the service was nice, I was more than a little disappointed with my meal. Sure, I may have not ordered the best thing on the menu, but you'd think a well-known veggie place could master the art of crispy tofu! My asian salad was mediocre and my tofu was soggy. Boo. Onto better meals...

Perch, Vancouver

Having read that Perch offered delicious vegan pizza, Paul and I decided to venture there one evening to try it out. We didn't quite realize the walk would take two and a half hours, but we journeyed forth with the prospect of pizza and beer motivating us. We started with the vegan nachos, which were pretty yummy. The chips were nestled on a layer of homemade garlicky hummus, a pleasant surprise if you ask me. The pizzas were good, although not what we'd expected. The crusts were gluten free and almost had the texture of a dense bread. I know, not ideal. However, they came complete with a variety of delicious toppings, like pesto, caramelized onions, artichokes and Daiya cheese. Plus, our waitress was awesome and the playlist included Animal Collective and songs from Grease. All in all, totally worth the hike!

Foundation, Vancouver

The Foundation is pretty damn cool. So cool, in fact, they don't even need a website. The place was packed with Vancouver's hippest hipsters but remained totally unpretentious. We had a to wait in line to get a table but it was so worth it- the portions were big, the prices were low, and the wall was covered in John Lennon quotes. I ordered a spicy peanut pasta with tofu and spinach and it was absolutely delicious! Bonus: the beers are served in mason jars, such a cute idea.

Local beer, B.C.

Local beer (like this and this) is just so good, what's not to love?

Well that's all the time I have for today but there's so much more to come, including vegan desserts, a divine b-day dinner and a summer recipe all my own!

  4. I too am the crazy person taking pictures in restaurants! Love the food diary - and the blog! As carnivore as I am you are definitely inspiring me to cross over to the herbivore-ian side.
