Morning glory

photos by pwisenberg

If you've ever wondered (because I'm sure you all have), what my ideal Sunday morning would be, it's this. I made the yummiest ever fruit smoothies, that included pineapple, banana and tons of citrus and Paul and I enjoyed them with fresh bagels (a Sunday tradition). I topped mine with this amazing (amazing!) jalapeno cilantro hummus that I got from the One of a Kind Show on Friday. It's funny that I went to the show expecting to get jewellery or scarves, and instead came away with hummus and this adorable hand-crafted mug. Go figure! Next, we took the domestic dorkiness to a whole new level by randomly deciding to go on a hunt for a jigsaw puzzle. Sadly, the only one we found was from the dollar store. But, on the plus side it's a puzzle of the Toronto skyline, eh eh? Lastly, we just received a shipment from amazon which always excites me. I can't wait to get reading- just need to finish Jonathan Franzen's epic (read:way too long?) Freedom first...

I hope your weekends were as peaceful as mine. Here's the delicious smoothie recipe:

Spring fresh fruit smoothie
Serves 4

1 pineapple, diced
2 bananas, chopped
zest and juice of 2 oranges
juice of 1/2 grapefruit
1 tray's worth of ice cubes
splash of almond milk (optional)

Whiz it all together in a blender and enjoy!

  5. Found your blog via Foodgawker...great pics! Wanted to say, I LOVE THAT HUMMUS. I get it at the Originals Craft Show, which is held 2x a year here in Ottawa, Ontario. Their Roasted Eggplant hummus is my favorite, though. I'm hooked on the stuff.

  6. Yum! I'd love to try the roasted eggplant too :D

  8. Everything looks and sounds good, except for the hummus. I love hummus. Just not that kind. I go for the pine nut or the roasted red pepper hummus.

    Love your kind of Sunday!

  15. I really think I'd like to spend my Sunday mornings at your house from now on. :D My spread would probably be similar, except that I'm reading a lot of David Quammen and I prefer a hot drink these days... it might look sunny in Colorado right now, but it's freaking freezing outside! :D

Also, I want that hummus. OMG. I used to buy cilantro hummus from Trader Joe's, and a whole package of the stuff would last me about an hour. :D

  17. Love the food pics! I'm stuck trying to finish Freedom too... not that it's as arrogant as his first novel. I'm just too distracted to concentrate on a dense read. Love to know your thoughts. Visit my blog and compare notes.

  47. Great photos!! I gave up on Freedom after about 300 pages (and nearly a month of picking it up, putting it down).

  48. "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is an excellent book, and not long enough! I adore hummus, but not for breakfast -- too much garlic -- and I couldn't take jalepenos on an empty stomach. But I'd make it with cilantro for another meal. Sounds good. I'm exploring making hummus with more flavor (basil, cilantro, and I often use roasted red pepper) and you know what? It can take just about anything you want to throw in there. On bagels I'm a cream cheese lover, myself. Veggie cream cheese is very easy to make and so much fresher tasting than the pre-packaged stuff. Just whiz the veggies up real small in a food processor, make sure the cream cheese is room temp., and mix together. Super good and much less expensive than buying it already done.

Your Sunday sounded just about perfect. Nice to have such a relaxing day before going back to work. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed.

  54. Well! Soundz like a vacation to me! However: subtract the almond milk for those of us prone to anaphalaxis the "allergic death", the grapefruit juice and bananas and ADD orange juice, a splash of "half 'n half" and a shot of vodka and you have a "Creamsickle" which is what I thought this article was about when I spied the top picture! Congrats on getting fresly pressed.

  61. I have been on a humus kick myself. It's great! I've taken to eating it on toast, as a dip for chips, as a spread on certain deli sandwiches, and if I am especially feening for it...I just get out a spoon and dig in.

The bagel sandwich idea also sounds particularly good. Right about now.

I'm gonna go get one now...with hummus....

    ReplyDelete
  62. As a humous lover I think I need to go and find myself a tub of that jalapeno flavour. Great pictures by the way. :)

  66. Dear Katherine,

Your breaktfast ideas are very inspirational. Would you please come over? Too bad, there are no bagels around here in Germany. At least not the original yummie ones. Makes me want to go back to the States/Canada again.

Smoothies are great. I just had one similar to yours as well, including some herbs, such as dandelion, nettle and also some ginger. I love ginger.

Thank you for this nice post.

    My English blog is www.beatbloodpressure.wordpress.com

    cheers,
